At approximately 6:50 PM EDT in Louisville Kentucky, the 145th running of the Kentucky Derby will take place. This year's Run for the Roses is gearing up to be one of the most wide-open in recent memory, and I must say trying to analyze this race using Astrology has been just as challenging. So keeping in the spirit of astrology and birthdates I wanted to share an interesting statistic with you.
Officially, every racehorse's birthday is January 1, so a horse that is born, or foaled, in April will be racing against other 3-year-olds born in May despite there being a one-month difference in actual age. How significant is a one-month difference? It's huge. Just think of a 3 year old horse that is born in January - how much more mature, experienced and physically more developed that horse will be than a horse born 5 months later in June.
In fact, since 1966, no horse born in June or later has ever won the Kentucky Derby. Since 2013, the first year of the Derby points system, all six Derby winners have had a February or March foal date. Every Triple Crown winner since Secretariat has either a February or March foal date, too.
So using this fact alone would rule out half of the field; Vekoma, Roadster, Maximum Security, Code of Honor, War of Will, Long Range Toddy, Tax, Cutting Humor and Country House, that were all born in April or May of 2016.
If I look at the birthdates of the remaining horses in the Kentucky there seems to be two that Astrologically stand out: Improbable, the number 11 horse – Foaled February 11th 2016 and Game Winner, the number 8 horse – Foaled March 6th 2016.
For Improbable, transiting Mars at 22 degrees Gemini, will be making an exact trine to his Sun, and with Jupiter retrograde opposing Mars on race day, this Mars-Jupiter combination to his Sun is a very energetic aspect for a win.
Game Winner, the most likely favorite now that Omaha Beach has withdrawn, has transiting Uranus at 3 degrees of Taurus sextile his Mercury in Pisces. This could be enough for this exceptional racehorse to win.
The main reason I really like Game Winner is because of the jockey. Joel Rosario, born Jan 14th 1985, was born with a Jupiter-Sun conjunction at 23-24 degrees of Capricorn. Transiting Pluto, now retrograde, has come back over this Natal conjunction. This could propel him for a great career victory. This would certainly propel his Hall of Fame status with a second Derby win. His first coming in 2013 on ‘Orb”.
I take Game Winner, for the win!
If you are looking for a long shot to back, the best long shot, from an astrological perspective would be Cutting Humor, foaled April 7th 2016. He was born with Mercury at 3 degrees of Taurus. Uranus will be exactly conjunct that degree on race day!
