Multistate Lotteries Are Spreading

The Mulitstate Lotteries, Powerball and MegaMillions, are spreading among the 45 states or so that offer the big Multistate Jackpots. As of February 2nd, we were able to determine that New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Texas, Washington, Illinois, Maryland, and Virginia were adding Powerball to their MegaMillions offering.*1

As for MegaMillions, we could only determine that Kansas, the District of Columbia, and South Carolina were bringing this game to play along with their Powerball tote board.**

The argument that these state lottery officials have made to their legislatures is that they will recapture the monies their citizens who cross state lines play on the big jackpots offered in neighboring states. Many of these officials claim that their revenues will increase an average of 5 percent with the offering of both games.

To us, this does not compute. People have gambling budgets. They will not gamble more because there are two Big Jackpot games. They will instead divide their budgets between the two offerings, leaving the overall amount of money spent the same.
